Introduced to the Ching (Qing) Imperial court, oil painting was perceived as a Western novelty by the Qing emperors like Kangxi, his son Yongzheng, and his grandson Qianlong. Talented Western Jesuit priests familiar with European painting techniqes, such as Sickleparth, Attiret, Castiglione and Panzi, served in the palace and drew portraits for the emperors. However, oil painting remained a curiosity and novelty. This is not to say that these Jesuit artists were not appreciated. In fact, they were expected to work with traditional Chinese painting materials, and as a result, their work was a synthesized Sino-European style

Details: Near the Lake - Viewing Pavilion built in the Tang Dynasty more than l,000 years ago, a pavilion for storing imperial books was put up in 1699, during the reign of the Qing Emperor Kangxi. In front of the latter, an open-air terrace jutting into the lake almost at the same level as the lake surface, has the name "Autumn Moon on Calm Lake". The name "cheongsam," meaning simply "long dress," entered the English vocabulary from the dialect of China's Guangdong Province (Cantonese). In other parts of the country including Beijing, however, it is known as "qipao", which has a history behind it.
